Partnership with UNHCR

Since May 2019, Ayateke Star Company Ltd has partnered with UNHCR to manage the Mahama Water Supply System, a collaboration that has been successfully renewed on an annual basis. This long-standing partnership plays a vital role in ensuring the consistent delivery of potable water to Mahama Refugee Camp and surrounding villages. Under the agreement, Ayateke Star is responsible for operating and maintaining the Mahama Water Treatment Plant, as well as managing the water distribution network within the camp. Today, the system serves approximately 65,000 refugees and 7,500 residents from the host community, reflecting a shared commitment to public health, service reliability, and humanitarian support.

Ayateke Star Company Ltd is proud to partner with the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) in a shared mission to enhance the well-being of refugees in Rwanda. This strategic collaboration is rooted in a mutual commitment to humanitarian service and sustainable development. In alignment with MINEMA’s mandate to coordinate and guide refugee affairs and disaster management, Ayateke Star plays a vital role in ensuring uninterrupted access to clean and safe water for residents of Mahama Refugee Camp. By operating and maintaining the Mahama Water Supply System, Ayateke Star supports MINEMA’s efforts to uphold the dignity, health, and resilience of displaced populations. This partnership not only strengthens service delivery within the camp but also fosters inclusive development by extending water access to surrounding host communities, reinforcing the values of solidarity and shared responsibility.

Kirehe District

Partnership with Kirehe District

Ayateke Star Company Ltd continues to maintain a strong and collaborative partnership with Kirehe District, contributing significantly to the district's development agenda—particularly in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector and other key areas of socio-economic growth. Over the years, Ayateke Star has worked closely with district authorities to implement impactful WASH projects that have improved access to clean water and sanitation services for thousands of residents. These initiatives include the construction and extension of water supply systems, installation of public water points, and development of inclusive sanitation facilities in schools and health centers. Through these efforts, underserved communities in Kirehe have experienced tangible improvements in public health, education, and overall quality of life. Beyond WASH, the partnership has extended to capacity building, job creation, and community engagement. Ayateke Star has supported local workforce development through targeted training programs for plumbers, billing officers, pump operators, and water use monitors—many of whom have secured permanent employment within the district. These efforts align with Kirehe's broader goals of promoting youth empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. The collaboration also contributes to district planning and infrastructure development, with Ayateke Star actively participating in strategic dialogues and joint initiatives that support long-term resilience and inclusive growth. By aligning its projects with the district's priorities, Ayateke Star ensures that its interventions are community-driven, sustainable, and impactful. This enduring partnership reflects a shared vision for a healthier, more prosperous Kirehe District—where access to essential services and opportunities is equitable and transformative. WaterAid

Partnership with WaterAid Rwanda

Ayateke Star Company Ltd, in partnership with WaterAid Rwanda, has been implementing a series of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects aimed at improving access to clean water and hygiene services in underserved communities across Eastern Rwanda. including a 50m3 water reservoir, a reservoir of 10m3 capacity, and 7 Public Water points. The collaboration began with MOFA I, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which involved the construction of a 22.6 km water supply system from Gashanga to Rusumo. The system includes a 50 m³ reservoir, a 10 m³ reservoir, and seven public water points, now serving approximately 18,000 residents in Kigarama and Nyamugari Sectors. Beneficiaries include border communities, schools, health centers, and business hubs within Kirehe District. As part of the sanitation component, three inclusive school latrines were constructed at Ecole Primaire Kimeshu, Shungerezi, and Nyagahanga. Building on this success, MOFA II, launched in April 2023, focused on the development of the Rubona–Nyagasenyi–Butezi Water Supply System and the construction of three inclusive school latrines in Kirehe District. This initiative further expanded access to safe water and improved sanitation infrastructure for surrounding communities. In April 2024, MOFA III was implemented in Bugesera District, Eastern Province. The project aimed to enhance the WASH environment in Nyarugenge Sector through the construction of the Nyarugenge Water Supply System, three inclusive school latrines, and seven handwashing facilities. Currently underway, MOFA IV, initiated in April 2025, targets both Kirehe and Bugesera Districts. It involves the construction of the Kagese Water Supply System in Nasho Sector, spanning 30.43 km, along with six inclusive latrines and handwashing facilities. The project is scheduled for completion and inauguration in December 2025. Through this strategic partnership with WaterAid Rwanda, Ayateke Star has successfully delivered MOFA I, MOFA II, and MOFA III, with MOFA IV nearing completion. These efforts reflect a shared commitment to sustainable development and improving lives through equitable access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

COFORWA

COFORWA is a Rwandan non-governmental organization (NGO) that works to improve the lives of Rwandan people through the promotion of sustainable development, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. It is one of the leading organizations in Rwanda and is recognized for its innovative and community-based approach to development. COFORWA's initiatives focus on water and sanitation, health, education, and economic empowerment, with a strong emphasis on gender equality and environmental sustainability. The organization works closely with local communities to identify needs and implement sustainable solutions that create lasting impact. Through its various programs, COFORWA has helped improve access to clean water, enhance agricultural productivity, and promote income-generating activities. The organization also plays a key role in capacity building and advocacy, empowering communities to take charge of their own development. COFORWA's community-based approach ensures that all interventions are culturally appropriate and aligned with the needs of the people they serve, making it a valued partner in Rwanda's development journey.

GIZ

Partnership with GIZ

Ayateke Star Company Ltd, in collaboration with GIZ, has been implementing a strategic capacity-building initiative aimed at enhancing the performance of rural water supply systems and promoting decent employment opportunities across Rwanda. The partnership was launched in 2021, beginning with a comprehensive Capacity Needs Assessment to identify skill gaps among personnel managing rural water infrastructure. Based on the findings, the project set out to train 650 individuals, including 200 plumbers, 200 billing officers, 150 water use monitors, and 100 pump operators. A core objective of the initiative was to ensure that at least 100 participants would secure permanent employment by the project’s conclusion. By 19 July 2023, the project had reached full completion, with notable achievements. A total of 185 plumbers, 193 billing officers, 150 water use monitors, and 95 pump operators successfully completed the training. Among them, 54 young graduates have already secured permanent positions, contributing directly to the project’s employment targets. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to professionalizing Rwanda’s rural water sector, equipping youth with market-relevant skills, and fostering long-term employment within the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) ecosystem.

WASAC

WASAC Partnership

Ayateke Star Company Ltd maintains a strategic partnership with the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) through formal contractual agreements in various areas of water supply management and quality control. This collaboration involves the operation and supervision of local water networks, infrastructure maintenance, and the implementation of best practices in water treatment and distribution. Working closely with WASAC, Ayateke Star ensures that water systems are efficiently managed and that all supplied water consistently meets national quality standards. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving service delivery, enhancing operational sustainability, and safeguarding public health across the regions served.
